Breech Baby & Moxibustion Protocol

Safe, non-invasive protocols to encourage optimal fetal positioning using Moxibustion.

TCM offers a safe and effective way to turn breech babies.

How Moxibustion Works.

Moxibustion (or "Moxa") involves heating a specific acupuncture point on the pinky toe (Zhiyin / BL67) using an herb called mugwort.

  • Adrenal Stimulation: The heat stimulates the adrenal cortex, which increases placental estrogen and changes uterine tonicity.
  • Fetal Activity: This shift triggers a surge in fetal activity (movement), giving the baby the momentum needed to somersault into the correct position.
  • The Window: This protocol is most effective between Weeks 33 and 36, before the baby becomes too large to turn easily.

Empowering You at Home.

Because consistency is key for turning a breech baby, this is a partnership.

  • In-Clinic: We perform the initial treatment, assess your constitution, and relax the pelvic ligaments (Round Ligaments) to create more space in the uterus.
  • At-Home: I provide you with the moxa sticks and teach you (and your partner) exactly how to perform the treatment at home for 10 days. This daily repetition is crucial for success.

Common Questions

Does moxibustion hurt the baby?

No. The baby experiences increased activity and movement, but the heat is applied to your toe, not the belly. It is generally very safe.

How many sessions does it typically take to turn a breech baby?

We recommend starting as soon as a breech presentation is confirmed, ideally between weeks 33 and 36. The protocol involves one in-clinic session followed by 10 days of daily home moxa treatment. Many babies turn within this window. Success depends on gestational age, amniotic fluid levels, pelvic geometry, and how consistently the home treatment is applied.

What if my baby doesn't turn?

If the baby remains breech after a full course of treatment, we shift our focus to supporting you through whatever birth plan you and your provider agree on — whether that is a planned Cesarean or a trial of external cephalic version (ECV). Acupuncture is excellent support before and after ECV as well.

How do I perform the home treatment?

Liz teaches you and your partner exactly how to use the moxa stick safely during the in-clinic session. You will leave with the moxa sticks, written instructions, and a clear protocol — including how long to treat, how close to hold the stick, and what sensations indicate the baby is responding. The home component is straightforward and manageable.
